The cover that judges you

A prototype for the 2015 annual of the Art Directors Club Netherlands. A book full of great creative work that has been judged and awarded.
That’s why I created a book cover that only unlocks when you approach it without any judgement.

How it works
My aim was to create a book cover that is human and approachable-hi-tech. If you approach the book, the face recognition system picks up your face and starts scanning it for signs of “judgement”. If you’re over excited or your face shows a sceptical expression, the book will stay locked. But if your expression is neutral (no judgement) the system will send an audio-pulse to the Arduino and the book will unlock itself.

I often worry about my scepticism and judgement getting in my way of amazement. Judgement should never hinder relentless enthusiasm of seeing things for the first time.

About the ADCN Annual design

Marcel Kampman was asked by the ADCN to come up with ‘a slightly disruptive’ way of presenting the 2015 edition of the network’s yearbook. Kampman shaped the idea of ADCN COVERS MORE with the aim to: ‘nudge creatives to look sideways. For this time of transition demands a broader view on what’s out there’. The proof’s in the pudding as he invited 11 front running designers to come up with unique tangible proof of what else is out there. During the expo of the covers the members of the ADCN get to feel, touch, smell and see what’s going on
